Figurally carved staff, Massim, Trobriand Islands.  

Wood, black patina, round staff, the upper third carved with a stylized human figure, min. dam., traces of wear and use, on metal base; at the far eastern point of New Guinea lies Milne Bay and the islands of the Massim Area often incorrectly referred to as the Trobriands. The Massim are well-known for their delicate and artifical ornaments. Their designs are often based on stylized birds heads.
