Aso architectural element, Dayak, Kalimantan, Indonesia.

This is an architectural element, probably a roof finial from an aristocrat’s house or tomb depicting the mythical Aso Dragon. The sculpture is carved out of two parts; a conical curved body supporting a long neck with incised scales, a long snout and along the head spiral patterns, the eyes are made of big blue glass beads. Small pieces of wood are placed in the head, probably to give the statue strength.

Wood, blackened, residues of white pigment (probably lime), cracks, minor missing parts, traces of weathering, wear and use. Custom mounted to wood base.
