Baby Carrier, Kenyah Dayak, Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia.

This is a traditional 'ba' baby carrier, made of wood with high quality deep carving and inlaid eyes. It shows three 'udoq' protective figures, an underworld figure which was thought to protect the child by keeping the evil spirits away particularly in the early months of life.

Materials: dry, middle brown wood, traces of lime, eyes inlaid with an unknown poreus material; possibly ceramic, coral…?, plaited rattan bands and a old rope underneath made of old plaited plastic fibre.

Condition: traces of wear and use, loose rattan, slightly dam., cracks.
