Dance wand, Asmat, Irian Jaya / Papua New Guinea.

A rare asmat dance wand made of light wood in slender openwork form, of fine detail, decorated with classic ornaments, bokoper motifs (navel), bird heads and incised patterns. Pecking birds represent both birth origins and the practice of headhunting.

Condition: remains of black, red, and white pigment, broken and restuck (see pictures), min. dam., weathered, traces of wear and use. On MDF base.
