Ancestor figure, Asmat, Irian Jaya / Papua New Guinea.

This very fine male asmat ancestor figure has the representation of a Praying Mantis, symbol of headhunting. Standing with legs slightly apart, free carved arms and decorated with incised ornamentation on the body. The intensity of the red ochre contrasts effectively with the chalky colors applied to the lighter wood. The nose is perforated and provided with a thin wooden nose bone.

Condition: remains of white pigment, min. dam., age cracks, weathered, traces of wear and use. On MDF base.

H: 76 cm - 29.9 inch.

Provenance: The previous owner bought this statue in 1966 from a lady who got the statue as a gift of a dutch missionary who was located in New Guinea.
