Ancestor figure, Dogon, Mali, Africa.

Small standing Dogon ancestor figure of very unusual form with flattened body, short upraised arms, crowned by an elongated face with a big flat nose. The gesture of raised arms should indicate the communication between the earth and heaven, specifically a prayer for rain. The Dogon place their figures on altars devoted to real or mythological ancestors.

Reddish brown wood, blackish brown patina, missing parts through insect caused damage, cracks, on MDF base.
