Top of a paddle, Ramu River, Papua New Guinea.
This small ancestral figure is from the top of a canoe paddle from the Ramu River area. This example is especially fine with the classic long nose, rising from a conical-shaped base, free carved arms, both hands resting aside the upper legs, adorned with turtle shell rings and a glossy, dark chocolate brown patina from generations of use.
The piece is 25,5 cm - 10 inch. in height and comes with a custom display mount.
Provenance: Purchased in 1972 from Henk Kouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
