Two spears, Asmat, Irian Jaya / Papua New Guinea.

Two beautiful old spears from the Asmat warriors of Papua New Guinea. Made from iron wood and decorated with fine openwork carving, incised ornamentation, weaving that holds feathers and a Cassowary nail at apex.

Condition: dry, hard wood, patina, remains of white pigment, weathered, min. dam., small cracks. The spears were previously cut into two parts and provided with brass fittings. This was commonly done to make it easier to transport.

The spears are measuring 250 cm - 98.5 inch.

Provenance: I've bought these spears 15 years ago from a gentleman who had inherited it from his father. The spears were then in the family for 75 years. So they probably date from the late 19th century.
