Salawaku Dance Shield, Halmahera, Moluccas, Indonesia.

Shields of this type were used as a protection during fights and for the Cakalele Dance, a kind of ceremonial war dance originating from North and Central Maluku.

This antique hourglass shaped shield is carved from soft wood, has a blackened faceted surface and is decorated with pieces of white porcelain. 

Condition; not one inlay is missing, obvious signs of wear and use.
