Gaschan shield, Somalia.

This is an extraordinary leather "gaschan" parrying shield of a Somali warrior. The front is very nicely tooled with design of circles around its center. The inner handle is bound with leather and the center of the inner side is incised and painted with black and red colors.

Material: thick animal hide (buffalo, giraffe, oryx?) and paint.

Condition: good; stains, scratches, the paint on the inner side faded, there is a natural sheen on the handle developed with tribal use.
