Bushcow helmet mask, Baule, Ivory Coast.

A fine and very old Baule Bushcow helmet mask, "bonu amwin", of immense proportions. The hollowed helmet carved in the form of a bush cow with an angular snout, triangular teeth and elongated nose framed by raised circular eyes beneath a domed forehead surmounted by three tapering horns at the crown.

Condition; dry encrusted aged patina, remains of red, brown and white pigments, restoration (horns), cracks, traces of abrasion, missing parts and evident use and age.

Height approximately: 63 cm - 24.8 inches. 29 cm - 11.5 inches wide.

Provenance: obtained from the estate of a collector from Hilversum, Netherlands.
