Mask, Karo-Batak, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Old Batak mask depicting a comedian (orang lawak). Hair, eyebrows and eyelashes are indicated with black paint, tin inlay teeth and cords to tie the mask.

A similar mask is to be found in a 1941 Dutch book on Batak art: Verdwijnend Cultuurbezit Beeldende Kunst der Bataks door A.J. de Lorm en G.L. Tichelman.

Made of yellow-brown hardwood, slightly dam., cracks. Without base.

Note: the cords from the ears are missing!
