Altar, Batoe, Indonesia.
This is a rare and very fine boat-shaped altar with an armless ancestor and two forked protective figure's. Carved with neck ornament, a bamboo tube with fabric around the body, crowned by an oval head with well-balanced facial features, big ears and a hat-like headgear with pointed protrusion. The Batoe (Batu) Islands are an archipelago on the west coast of Sumatra.
Wood, reddish brown patina, black pigment, bamboo tube, cotton and raffia attachments.
Height without raffia: 31 cm/ 12.2 inch. Width : 35 cm/ 13.8 inch.
