Lime gourd, Lake Sentani, Papua New Guinea.
This Lagenaria gourd and spatula are from Lake Sentani on the northwest coast of New Guinea. Lime containers were used for the storage of lime. The spiral patterns are burnt into the gourd.
Description: brown, pear-shaped gourd and a thin wooden spatula inserted in hole at top; hollow gourd decorated with an elongated curvilinear pokerwork design; residue on spatula.
Gourd: 26 cm/ 10.2 inches long.
