Beaded apron, Cenderawasih Bay / Geelvink Bay, Irian Jaya - Papua New Guinea.

A fine Cenderawasih Bay / Geelvink Bay woman's beaded apron. It has a beautiful and complex geometric design and cloth tassels at the bottom. These pieces are made by women and worn by both men and women. The glass trade beads are of Dutch origin, centuries old and were brought to the area by traders looking for exotic bird feathers and other local trade items.

Glass trade beads, natural fiber and cotton cloth, it is a gorgeous example in excellent condition. Early 20th Century. Size without waist band H: 55 cm - 21.6 inch : W: 54 cm - 21.3 inch.
