Beaded smoking pipe, Xhosa, South Africa.

Xhosa pipes were smoked by both men and women. The longer pipes were smoked by women. The higher the status of the woman, the longer the stem of the pipe. One can see the European influence in the design of these pipes, especially Dutch clay pipes which had longer stems than other European pipes. They were smoked by inserting a reed mouthpiece into the end of the stem.

This is a wonderful used Xhosa smoking pipe with a beautifully beaded stem. Length: 26 cm - 10.2 inch.
